MI Students Visit DNA Learning Center

On Thursday, December 11th, Medical Intervention students travelled with Mr. Santiago and Ms. Lamarque to the DNA Learning Center at City Tech.

MI students did an experiment to test their own DNA to find out if they are “super tasters” (able to taste the bitter PTC flavor). In this experiment, students extracted their DNA from cheek cells and used PCR to amplify their PTC gene. Then, they ran gel electrophoresis to see their genotype (genetic version of the PTC gene). They also tested their phenotype by tasting different concentrations of PTC. In most cases, students were able to predict their genes, based upon their tasting ability! The lab instructor was very impressed by our MI students' lab technique and pipetting skills, which helped them to successfully complete this 6-hour college-level lab.

Great job, MI!
