Loughlin Celebrates Civic Spirit Week!
On Tuesday, March 18th, The Civic Spirit Club sponsored a very informative and important seminar on vaping. The student body was invited to hear and receive information from Ms. Natalie John RN of the Greater NYC Black Nurses Association. Some 60 Loughlinites attended and participated in a question-and-answer session. Valuable handouts were distributed and refreshments were enjoyed. Nurse John is a relative of one of the Civic Spirit Club members.
Civic Spirit Day was celebrated on Thursday with a trip to the Tweed Court House in lower Manhattan. We joined with several schools from NY, NJ, and Washington D.C. to participate in a day of leadership and civic training. Workshops were held for the students and a three-member panel of civic leaders engaged with the assembled students. The co-founder of the program Rabbi Robert Hirt was on hand to welcome the future civic leaders. Afterwards, the students did a mini tour to see City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Friday wrapped up with a special trip for the Civic Spirit Club and some guests to Brooklyn Borough Hall to meet with Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Deputy Borough President Rev. Kimberly Council '90. DBP Council is an Alumnus of Bishop Loughlin and a current Board member. The Borough President spent time with the students answering all their questions and participating in a tour of the magnificent building. The group was treated to a special visit to the Topography Department to see maps of Brooklyn from the 1920s and sneak visit to the prison holding cells from it's active court house days.
